Question about jewelry (don’t know where else to ask…)?

Question by brevejunkieisback: Question about jewelry (don’t know where else to ask…)?
What is a “cutlet” when referred to as diamonds? Also, if I had a piece of jewelry appraised for “insurance purposes” what would I get if I sold it outright? The same as the “insurance appraisal?”

Well a cutlet is the pointy bottom part of the diamond. The smaller the better. As for your other question, I have no clue.

Q&A: Help getting a ring appraisal at a jewelry store?

Question by : Help getting a ring appraisal at a jewelry store?
Hey, I have this old ring that I really don’t wear anymore than an ex boyfriend gave to me. I know he spent a lot on it and I don’t want to sell it to a pawn shop because I’m not desperate for the money and would rather get the most that I can out of it over an extended period of time instead of not getting much right away.
I’m not positive about the rock that’s in the ring. I’ve been told it’s a diamond with two inclusions, but I really don’t know all that much about jewelry and I’m sure that if I were to buy something like a ring, that I would want to know all I can about it.
My question is, do most jewelry stores give appraisals? Like can I go to a jewelry store and ask and get a printout of everything about my ring? About how much do the papers cost? If I ask for an “appraisal” will they know that I’m talking about the papers or are the papers called something?
If you know a lot about this stuff please give me any information you can about selling my ring. It will be much appreciated!

yes, they will know what you are after when you ask for an appraisal. Most appraisals are for insurance purposes so display the value what you have to pay to get a brand new item. It’s not the resale price at all. Check out this site for better explanation http://www.wedunit.com.au/pages.php?pageid=27. Prices vary, it pays to ask a few stores.

How do you know when getting a piece of jewelry appraised, that you are getting the best advice?

Question by Russell Scott: How do you know when getting a piece of jewelry appraised, that you are getting the best advice?
And that you can trust the appraiser? Do they write up some kind of proof on a form or ticket of some sort so you will not be scammed? A family friend is getting a divorce and even though it’s considered a “friendly” split, the soon to be ex-husband told his soon to be ex-wife that she could keep the wedding ring and he told her that it was a 1/2 caret perfect diamond with no flaws in it. So she is curious on what it might be worth, but of course she wants good proof and I can’t blame her. Opinions/answers would be greatly appreciated.
***Cleo…that’s a great question concerning if the ex-husband has some paper work on where he got the ring. I will let them know. Thank you so much!

***Rita Rose & Lynn….WOW–Your stories really made me think. I will pass them on to the divorcing friends. Thanks!

***Midnight…thanks…another great point about the serial number.

Go to a few different popular diamond/jewelry stores and get it appraised. If the results are all very similar, then you’re probably getting good information. If not, keep looking until you get enough of the same result.
